We recently had the honour of welcoming the Silver Compass, an inspiring women’s group, for an exclusive visit to the Architectural Conservation Trust. This special moment marked the first complete tour through these four buildings that reflect the architectural vision of three generations of architects.
The tour was conducted by architect Luc Vanhout, curator Jan Vanhout, and interior architect and resident of the Jozef Schellekens architect house, Rik Hendrickx
The architecture discovered by visitors is a living testament to how design and construction have evolved within the same family over decades. Each building carries a unique story and reflects the zeitgeist and innovative ideas of its designer:
Jozef Schellekens House (Steenweg op Mol 64-66) – The modernist vision of Jozef Schellekens, in which he experimented with light, space and functionality, continues to inspire to this day. His progressive approach and clean formal language laid the foundation for the generations that followed.
Carli Vanhout – Paul Schellekens Studio (Parklaan 146 + Solar House) – These buildings represent the second generation of architects in the family: Carli Vanhout and Paul Schellekens. Their designs show a further development of modernism and functionality, with a refined interaction between interior and exterior spaces.
Luc Vanhout House (Parklaan 148) – The third generation, represented by Luc Vanhout, brought a contemporary interpretation of architecture. His design integrates elements from previous generations, but with a fresh perspective on sustainability, innovation and contemporary living quality.
The tour offered a unique insight into how architecture is not only a reflection of its time, but also of personal and familial evolution within the profession. The various buildings together form a harmonious whole, where tradition and innovation go hand in hand.
After this inspiring journey, the day was concluded with a delicious lunch, provided by Nicolas Nuyens of Signature Catering. Under a radiant summer sun, the attendees enjoyed refined dishes, good company and a unique architectural setting.
This day brought not only a fascinating look at the architecture of three generations, but also a warm encounter between people with a shared passion for design and heritage. An experience that will resonate for a long time.
