In 2022, Riens Smet, the granddaughter of architect Karel Beuten – the husband of Lieve Schellekens and thus son-in-law of Jozef Schellekens – completed her master’s thesis in Interior Architecture. She focused on the architectural structure and spatial principles of her great-grandfather Jozef Schellekens’ residence.
The residence served as a magnificent example of progressive modernist architecture, where innovative spatial organisation and functional aesthetics are central. The study provided profound insights into how Schellekens experimented with open floor plans, visual connections, and light penetration, and how these principles remain relevant in contemporary design to this day.
Her master’s thesis also includes a video, which offers a visual analysis of the residence and highlights its unique architectural characteristics. This video provides exceptional insight into Jozef Schellekens’ legacy and demonstrates how his design philosophy continues to inspire.
